Objective

  1. To create a passion in the application of mathematics in solving day-to-day scientific and engineering problems.
  2. To create an interest in active thinking and problem solving.
  3. To introduce different facets of mathematics.
  4. To provide hands-on experience in engineering problem solving.
  5. It is the earnest desire of the organizing committee to conduct this competition in an entertaining and friendly manner.

Competition level

  1. Senior Level – Students enrolled in grade 8 and below
  2. Junior Level – Students enrolled in grade 6 and below

Eligibility, Testing standard and Prizes

  1. All full time students registered in Ontario Curriculum Schools are eligible.
  2. Questions are designed to reflect the Ontario Curriculum level
    • Grade 8 (Senior Level)
    • Grade 6 (Junior Level).
  3. Questions relate to the application of mathematics to science and engineering.
  4. Some questions will be based on topics introduced during the competition.
  5. First, second and third prizes will be awarded in each level.
  6. All participants will be given a certificate of participation.

Registration

  1. Registration will be on first come first served basis.
  2. Approximately one hundred students will be registered for each level. Additional applicants will be wait-listed.
  3. There is no limit on number of students from each school.
  4. Download a Registration Form and a Parental Consent Form
  5. Email a properly completed registration form to mathletics email before 2007-04-07
  6. The registration fee is $5.00 per student per level. Cheques are to be made payable to PEO Scarborough Chapter.
  7. Mail the Parental Consent form and the Registration Fee to:

  8. Normally a school teacher will register the students in his/her class. If a school does not participate, parents or guardians of interested students may register directly with a properly filled in registration form.
  9. Most students will normally participate in only one level of this competition. A grade 6 (or below) student may choose to participate in both levels provided they register for both levels in the registration form and indicate their preferred level in their covering email. Their first preference will be accommodated as per the Mathletics 2007 Rules and their second preference will be entered into the waiting list.
  10. Students with financial difficulties can contact the organizer for assistance.
  11. The parental consent form and the registration fee must be mailed and received by us before 2007-04-14

Competition format

  1. Both Senior and Junior levels are individual events.
  2. Each level of the competition will have two rounds:
    • Round 1 - Introductory Round – Warm up questions
    • Round 2 - Challenge Round – Fast paced challenging questions
  3. All participants are required to participate in both rounds.
  4. Speed and accuracy are tested.
  5. Each participant will be provided with a numbered wireless Clicker.
  6. Questions will be projected on a large screen.
  7. The wireless Clicker will be used by the student to enter their answers.
  8. A computer will record all responses and compile the marks.
  9. Students are allowed to bring and use aids like calculators, paper, pens, and books.
  10. Cell phones or any device capable of telecommunication are not permitted.
  11. Latecomers will not be allowed to join.

Scoring

  1. Marks from Round 1 and Round 2 will be added together.
  2. For some questions bonus marks will be awarded to the student who provides the correct answer first.
  3. Marks will not be deducted for wrong answers or unanswered questions.

General

  1. This contest will be conducted in English only.
  2. A panel of adjudicators will resolve all disputes. Their decisions are final and binding.
  3. Teachers, parents, guardians and their guests are welcome to attend the event and cheer the participants. The competition will be held in an auditorium. The guests will be able to witness the whole event and see the participants in action.
  4. Teachers, parents, guardians and their guests are required not to assist or interfere with the participants.
  5. Space is limited for the audience. Entry is on a first come first served basis.
  6. Food and drinks are not permitted inside the auditorium.
  7. A student without proper registration will not be permitted to participate in the competition.
  8. Model questions are posted on our website.
