Review by Ken Kanakaratnam, P.Eng.

The lecture "Why Astrology is Science" was delivered by Tapan Das, Ph.D., P.Eng. The event was organized by PEO Scarborough Chapter and was held in the Community Room of the Malvern Library on the 29th of September, 2009.

Dr. Das is the vice chair of the PEO Mississauga Chapter and is a respected volunteer and community activist. He has been researching astrology, cosmology, biofield and quantum mechanics for the last several years. The lecture was mainly based on his recently published book titled "Why Astrology is Science: Five Good Reasons".

The lecture was very interesting and informative and was well presented by Dr. Das. He spoke eloquently and passionately of the reasons for his believe that astrology is a social science based on statistical analysis and probability and how it is explained by cosmic energy and biofield. He also stressed its linkage with alternative medicine and its similarity to quantum mechanics.

The question and answer session that followed the speech was extremely lively, enthusiastic, opinionated, witty and at times very vocal. It appeared that some in the audience were not in agreement with the arguments put forward and conclusions reached by the speaker.

Overall it was a very pleasant experience and we all came out with a new perspective on a very interesting and controversial subject.

Review By Vinay Malhotra, P.Eng.

On Tuesday September 29, 2009 seminar was presented at the Malvern Library Community Room on “ Why Astrology is Science”. The seminar was presented by Dr. Tapan Das and was based on his recently published book.

Before the seminar, from 6 to 6:30 pm some light snacks were served. All the participants enjoyed these and introduced each other (networking) during this time. Promptly at 6:45 pm, Raju Chander introduced the presenter Dr. Tapan Das.

After brief Introduction, Tapan Das proceeded with his presentation. He spoke for about one hour. He explained about 5 scientific reasons as the basis for his belief that Astrology is Science. These are:

1.Astrology is based on Statistical analysis

2.Astrology is social science

3.Astrology is linked with alternative medicine

4.Astrology is explained by cosmic energy and Biofield

5.The basis of Astrology is similar to quantum mechanics

Tapan Das is very knowledgeable of the subject. The presentation was presented very well, and was very informative. However, the presentation failed to convince me and many others that Astrology is Science. There were no convincing facts in favor of the subject. Therefore, I feel the title of the seminar should have been “Is Astrology a Science?”

There was a 30 minute question period at the end of the presentation (7:30-8:00pm). It was quite lively session. However, instead of a question period it became more of a discussion session, as there were no clear cut answers to many of the questions.

The presentation session concluded at 8pm, with a token gift presentation by Dr. Santosh Gupta to Tapan Das.

Overall, the seminar was good . It allowed us (participants) the opportunity to expand our knowledge base beyond the Engineering Subjects, and think outside the box regarding Astrology. The organizers deserve thanks from the participants for arranging this seminar.
